Massena Electric Department

Massena voters went to the polls in 1974 to determine the fate of a referendum that would see the creation of a municipal electric company for the community. In response to the support shown by voters, in May of that year the Town Board passed a resolution creating the Massena Electric Department (MED). The municipal electric utility began operations May 8, 1981.

MED is one of just 47 municipally-owned power companies in New York State and its system covers 131 square miles with more than 9,000 customers. Massena Electric provides businesses and residents with energy at rates that rank in the lowest 10% nationally. In 2002, the new Engstrom Substation was brought on line to enable future load growth for existing and potential customers.

Outstanding service reliability, extremely competitive rates and commitment to the environment are the hallmarks of MED. Massena Electric: Bringing low-cost, reliable power for business, for family, for you.
